DORSAL FINS HIGH LOW

Melbourne collective Dorsal Fins give new meaning to collaboration with their continuous back-and-forth process between nine members resulting in their surprisingly coherent sound proving that this Australian band are totally in-tune. Dorsal Fins began as an outlet for Liam McGorry (ex-trumpeter for Saskwatch), who then started sharing demos with local songwriting and vocal talents Ella Thompson and Jarrad Brown. Before long this trio were are formidable force of creativity, producing tracks that would only be complete with the added input of six more musicians Richard Bradbeer, Sam Raines, Rob Muinos, Olaf Scott, Ross Beaton and Lachlan O'Kane. As lead vocalist Thompson explains, this uncanny nine-way relationship is a potent topic for their music, especially in new single ‘High Low’. The song “is a meditation on the extremes of the world. Ups and downs, love and war and our connection to one another.” The strange, pixelated video also lends meaning to the song, where the band wander through Warburton Redwood Forest with only each other and their respective instruments as guides. What’s great about Dorsal Fins’ music isn’t just the synchronicity, but also the wilder moments, with guitars, drums and keys leaping out of the speakers. - HT
